DOG TRAINING THAT CHANGES MORE THAN BEHAVIOR

From puppy foundations and everyday obedience to anxiety, reactivity and serious behavioral problems.

At Canine Evolutions, we don’t force every dog into the same training system. We look at the dog in front of us — their genetics, temperament, nervous system, environment, learning history and relationship with the human holding the leash — and build the training from there.

Because lasting change doesn’t begin with more commands.

It begins with understanding.

FROM CONFLICT TO CONNECTION

Relationship-based dog training and behavior modification in Toledo, Washington.

Serving Toledo, Chehalis, Centralia, Longview, Lewis County, Thurston County and the greater Cowlitz County area.

WHETHER YOU’RE STARTING FRESH OR YOU’VE ALREADY TRIED EVERYTHING

Maybe you have a new puppy and simply want to start correctly.

Maybe your dog pulls on the leash, ignores you when distractions appear, struggles to settle in the house, or seems to have forgotten every bit of training the moment you leave the backyard.

Or maybe things have become much harder.

Your dog barks and lunges at other dogs. Visitors have become stressful. Anxiety is controlling your household. There is guarding, fear, aggression, shutdown, or even a bite history. Perhaps you’ve already worked with another trainer, followed videos online, bought equipment, practiced endlessly — and you still feel stuck.

These are very different dogs.

They should not all receive the same solution.

WE WORK WITH:

  • Puppy development and young-dog foundations

  • Leash manners and everyday obedience

  • Recall, engagement and real-world reliability

  • Over-arousal and difficulty settling

  • Fear and anxiety

  • Reactivity and leash aggression

  • Resource guarding

  • Human-directed or dog-directed aggression

  • Dogs with a bite history

  • Dogs who have already been through training without lasting change

  • Advanced training and long-term development

TRAIN THE DOG IN FRONT OF YOU

Dog training has become increasingly obsessed with methods.

Which tool?

Which command?

Which technique?

Which training camp?

I believe we need to ask a more important question first:

Why is this dog behaving this way?

Behavior does not exist in isolation. Genetics matter. Early development matters. Reinforcement history matters. Environment matters. Stress matters. Sleep matters. The emotional state of the dog matters. And the behavior, clarity and emotional state of the human matter too.

A dog who is overwhelmed, conflicted or chronically over-aroused cannot simply be commanded into feeling safe. At the same time, love without clarity does not create stability either.

At Canine Evolutions, we work in the space between those two worlds.

We teach the dog, but we also educate the human. We develop communication, structure, trust, mechanical skill and emotional regulation so that training becomes something you build with your dog, rather than something continually being done to your dog.

That is the foundation of our philosophy:

FROM CONFLICT TO CONNECTION.

YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW WHICH PROGRAM YOU NEED

That’s my job.

One of the biggest mistakes in dog training is asking an owner to choose a solution before anyone has properly evaluated the problem.

Should you take private lessons?

Does your dog need behavior modification?

Would Board & Train be appropriate?

Do you need several sessions or months of support?

I don’t want you guessing, and I don’t want to sell you a package simply because it happens to be on a menu.

EVERY NEW CLIENT STARTS WITH AN EVALUATION.

I meet you and your dog, assess what is actually happening, and then we decide what makes sense.

YOUR FIRST STEP

NEW CLIENT EVALUATION — $199

Up to 75 minutes

For puppies, adolescent dogs, obedience, household manners, engagement, leash work, training foundations and dogs without significant aggression, fear or behavioral risk.

During the evaluation we will look at your dog’s behavior, communication, stress patterns, handling and training history. You will leave with a clearer understanding of what I see, what you can begin changing immediately, and what training path I recommend moving forward.

If you enroll in a training program within 7 days, your full $199 evaluation fee is credited toward your program investment.

SCHEDULE NEW CLIENT EVALUATION

BEHAVIOR EVALUATION — $299

Up to 75 minutes

For dogs displaying aggression, reactivity, fear, anxiety, guarding, shutdown, separation-related problems or a bite history.

Behavior cases require more than obedience exercises. We need to understand triggers, intensity, recovery, environmental pressure, learned patterns, safety concerns and what is happening on both ends of the leash.

Your evaluation includes a behavioral assessment, immediate management and safety recommendations, and a clear recommendation for the next phase of training.

If you enroll in a training program within 7 days, your evaluation fee is credited toward your program investment.

Not sure which evaluation applies to your dog? Choose the Behavior Evaluation.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOUR EVALUATION?

There is no pressure to fit your dog into a predetermined program.

After I have evaluated your dog, I will explain what I believe is happening, what I believe needs to change and which training path makes the most sense for you.

Depending on the dog, that may include:

PRIVATE TRAINING

Individual coaching for owners who want to remain directly involved in every stage of their dog’s development.

Private training can include puppy foundations, obedience, leash work, engagement, recall, behavior coaching and advanced real-world training.

BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION

For dogs whose problems go beyond ordinary obedience.

We work with fear, anxiety, reactivity, aggression, guarding, over-arousal and other patterns where understanding the dog’s emotional and behavioral state is essential to creating lasting change.

The goal is not simply to stop what your dog is doing.

The goal is to understand why it is happening, change the conditions maintaining it, and build a more stable way forward.

START WITH A BEHAVIOR EVALUATION

BOARD & TRAIN

For cases where daily professional structure, repetition and consistency can create momentum that is difficult to reproduce through occasional lessons alone.

Canine Evolutions is intentionally not a high-volume training kennel. The number of dogs accepted is limited because meaningful training requires observation, individualization and time.

Your dog is not a number entering an assembly line.

EXPLORE BOARD & TRAIN

THE HUMAN MATTERS TOO

You can send your dog to the best trainer in the world, but sooner or later the dog comes home.

That is why I have never believed dog training should be limited to teaching the dog.

I teach humans how to observe.

How to recognize stress before it becomes an explosion.

How to use space and movement.

How to become clearer with timing.

How to stop accidentally reinforcing the very behavior they are trying to eliminate.

How to understand when their dog is capable of learning — and when the nervous system has already moved beyond that point.

And perhaps most importantly, how to become part of the dog’s regulation rather than another source of pressure and confusion.

When the human changes, the relationship changes.

And when the relationship changes, possibilities appear that commands alone could never create.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS. SO DOES HOW THAT EXPERIENCE IS USED.

Canine Evolutions is led by Cynologist Bart de Gols, whose work is centered on canine behavior, learning, development and the relationship between dogs and humans.

Bart’s approach does not begin with a favorite training tool or a one-size-fits-all methodology. It begins with observation.

The dog in front of him determines the conversation.

Years of studying behavior, working with dogs across a wide range of temperaments and disciplines, educating handlers and developing both working and companion dogs have shaped an approach built around science, experience, relationship and practical application.

But knowledge alone is not enough.

The goal is to make that knowledge useful to the person standing on the other end of the leash.

Because the greatest trainer your dog will ever have should eventually be you.

MEET BART DE GOLS

REAL DOGS. REAL PEOPLE. REAL CHANGE.

Training is deeply personal.

For many of our clients, Canine Evolutions was not the first place they contacted. Some arrived after years of frustration. Some had already worked with other trainers. Others simply wanted to prevent problems before they began.

What they shared was the desire to understand their dog more deeply and create something that would last beyond a training session.

“This is the only place any of my dogs will ever go to for training.”

— Eugena H.

“No two lessons are ever the same. You will learn how to learn and, in the process, reach new levels of communication and relationship with your dog.”

— Thalia O.

“Not some general, cookie-cutter program in the least.”

— Kevin C.

SERVICE DOG TRAINING

TRAINING WHEN RELIABILITY MATTERS BEYOND CONVENIENCE

Canine Evolutions also provides specialized service-dog development and training for individuals whose dogs may become an important part of their independence and daily functioning.

Service-dog training requires far more than teaching tasks. Temperament, environmental stability, recovery, neutrality, relationship, health and suitability all matter.

Whether you already have a potential service dog or are exploring what type of dog may be appropriate, the process begins by determining what is realistic for both the human and the dog.

EDUCATION BEYOND THE TRAINING FIELD

Understanding your dog should not end when a training session ends.

Canine Evolutions provides educational resources for dog owners, handlers and trainers who want to go deeper into behavior, learning, neuroscience and the human-canine relationship.
